Moderately toxic by ingestion.
Used to stain chromosomes and nuclei crimson and cytoplasm pink. Prepare by dissolving 1g orcein in 45 mL of nearly boiling glacial acetic acid. Cool and slowly add 55 mL distilled water. Shake well and filter. Add 1-2 mL conc. hydrochloric acid. Slide containing section and stain may be heated carefully in the hot air above a bunsen flame using forceps, do not boil.

Disposal: waste solutions of this chemical may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer).
