Harmless.
The term usually refers to paraffins, kerosene and higher hydrocarbons. Medical liquid paraffin contains almost exclusively aliphatic hydrocarbons and is harmless, but many paraffin liquids contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, some of which are carcinogenic. Paraffin liquids, other than medical, should be regarded as toxic and care taken to avoid skin contact or inhalation of vapour.
Medical paraffin can be used to cover sodium and lithium metals to minimise oxidation and reaction with moisture. Spontaneously ignites above 300C.
