Most alcohols are volatile, flammable liquids, which can react explosively with oxidants such as concentrated nitric acid.
They also react violently with alkali metals producing explosive hydrogen gas.
Methanol is the most toxic of alcohols and if ingested can cause blindness.

Other alcohols are less dangerous but can still have significant toxic properties. Alcohols are less damaging to the skin than other solvents but remain a fire risk.Alcohols are used in the preparation of esters. Primary, secondary and tertiary alcohols are commonly examined for their chemical reactions with oxidising agents.

Disposal: Waste solutions of alcohols miscible in water may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer) with adequate flushing.
