Formaldehyde is very toxic, is a sensitiser, and is a suspected carcinogen. Acetaldehyde and other aldehydes are less toxic but are still dangerous substances. Some are volatile, flammable liquids, which have noxious and irritant vapours and can provoke asthma attacks. Aldehydes are skin irritants. Avoid breathing the vapours of aldehydes and avoid skin contact. Use a fume cupboard where practicable; otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area. Eye and skin protection should be worn.

Disposal: Waste solutions of aldehydes miscible in water may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer) with adequate flushing.
