Use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area. Do not mix with active metals such as sodium, magnesium or aluminium, since the metal chloride and carbon may be formed in a highly exothermic reaction.
Ozone-depleting chemical; being phased out of use. Substitute non-chlorinated solvents such as acetone, ethanol or light petroleum fraction. Use as a solvent in 'white out' correction fluid. Use ethanol as a solvent for dilute solutions.
