All organic chloro-compounds are toxic if inhaled or ingested. They vary from the extreme toxicity of carbon tetrachloride to the milder toxicity of dichloromethane. Many chloro-compounds are volatile and form toxic vapours. Some chloro-compounds can be absorbed into the body through intact skin. Nearly all chloro-compounds are skin irritants. Acid chlorides such as acetyl or benzoyl chloride are also very reactive and corrosive substances, which can severely damage the skin, particularly the mucous membranes and release corrosive hydrogen chloride gas on contact with moisture. It is essential to prevent skin contact with all organic chloro-compounds and to avoid breathing their vapours. Waste chloro-compounds organic should be collected separately. Do not mix with other organic wastes, which may be disposed of more easily. ALSO SEE SEPARATE LISTING FOR EACH CHEMICAL.
