Evolves highly toxic fumes on decomposition or on boiling with dilute acids. If fumes are produced, use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area. Use eye and skin protection when splashes of solutions are possible.Do not heat with concentrated sulfuric acid since the reaction is violent and highly toxic carbonyl sulfide and sulfur dioxide gases are produced. Toxic if ingested. Can be used to test for the presence of iron(III) ions in solution, since intensely blood-red hexathiocyanato-iron(III) ion are produced. Useful for demonstrating a solid-phase endothermic reaction: shake ammonium thiocyanate with barium hydroxide in a loosely stoppered test tube. Disposal: Waste solutions of this chemical (not containing heavy metals) may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer) with adequate flushing.
