Very toxic by all routes of exposure; highly irritant vapour; skin irritant; reacts violently with water to form toxic hydrogen chloride gas. Use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities (<50 mL) in a well-ventilated area. Use eye and skin protection when splashes are possible.The reaction with ethanol, after a short induction period, may be violent enough to eject the material from the apparatus. Reactions with phenylamine and concentrated ammonia are extremely vigorous and produce copious white fumes.
Note: A 5% solution is not hazardous according to the Worksafe list of designated substances.
