Hazardous Chemical
II 1463
1333-82-0
Highly toxic if ingested or by skin exposure; carcinogenic. Forms explosive mixtures with combustible materials or organic compounds; reacts violently with water.

BANNED CHEMICAL IN DET SCHOOLS.

"Chromic acid", prepared by mixing a metal chromate or dichromate with concentrated acid, was once used widely as a glass cleaning mixture. Do not use chromic acid for cleaning glassware. It is a highly dangerous material and other cleaning methods (detergents or suitable solvents) should be used instead. Chromate precipitates should not be isolated and dried in experiments, since they are too toxic.
In the oxidation of alcohols, etc. with acidified dichromate solutions, ensure that all solid material has dissolved and the mixture is homogeneous before heating is commenced. CAS number refers to the solid form.
