Hazardous Chemical
I 2031
7697-37-2
Highly toxic by all routes of exposure; lung-irritant vapour. Forms explosive mixtures with alcohols and many other organic compounds; highly corrosive; skin irritant.
Use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area.

Use eye and skin protection when splashes are possible. Attacks cork and rubber rapidly, especially if hot; use all-glass equipment. Reacts violently or explosively with ethanol, acetone, acetic acid and most organic compounds except for alkanes.

Reacts violently with salts, such as sodium thiosulfate, which can be oxidised. Reacts vigorously with most metals, especially when hot and explosively with active metals such as sodium, potassium, lithium and calcium.

The pure acid is colourless; it reacts with light to form nitrogen oxides, which colour the acid yellow.

Disposal: Waste solutions of this chemical may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer), after making the solution pH: 8-10.
