Hazardous Chemical
III 1479
10588-01-9
Highly toxic if ingested or by skin absorption; carcinogenic; skin irritant. Use eye and skin protection when splashes can occur. May cause allergic reactions.
Reacts violently with active metals such as sodium, aluminium and magnesium, with carbon, sulfur and phosphorus, and with a wide range of easily oxidised organic compounds. Chromic acid, prepared by mixing a metal chromate or dichromate with concentrated acid, was once used widely as a glass cleaning mixture. It is a highly dangerous material and other cleaning methods (detergents or suitable solvents) should be used instead.
Chromate precipitates should not be isolated and dried in experiments, since they are highly toxic. In the oxidation of alcohols, etc. with acidified dichromate solutions, ensure that all solid material has dissolved and the mixture is homogeneous before heating is commenced.
