Hazardous Chemical
II 1170
64-17-5
Slightly toxic if ingested or inhaled; highly flammable; prolonged contact with skin causes irritation.
Use eye and skin protection where splashes can occur.
Use in a well-ventilated area.
Forms violently explosive mixtures with nitric acid and other oxidising agents. Reaction of ethanol with acidified dichromate solution is highly exothermic. Potassium reacts violently with ethanol. Do not heat ethanol in a container over an open flame; use a water bath. Any experiments involving the combustion of ethanol are potentially hazardous. Ethanol (or other alcohols) may be used in small quantities in burners to measure heats of combustion, and for reaction with alkanoic acids to form esters. Oxidised to form ethanoic acid.
Note: Aqueous solutions of ethanol have a much lower flammability, where:

ethanol >70% (PG II)

24% < ethanol <70% (PG III)

ethanol <24% Not a dangerous good.

Disposal: Waste solutions of this chemical may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer) with adequate flushing.
