Releases heat on contact with moisture; toxic hydrogen sulfide gas is evolved on contact with moisture and acids; toxic vapours released on heating in air; reacts violently with oxidising agents. Calcium sulfide may be a safer alternative. Use in a fume cupboard if practicable; otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area.
