Toxic if ingested; corrosive due to the presence of sodium hydroxide; avoid skin contact.

Prepare by dissolving 3 g copper sulfate and 12 g potassium tartrate in 1 litre of distilled water, then adding 600 mL of 10% sodium hydroxide with constant stirring. A purple colour indicates the presence of protein. Use eye and skin protection when splashes can occur.
Note: Biuret test solutions, containing 2 M sodium hydroxide, may be used by students 7-10 in small volumes in dropper bottles.
