Hazardous Chemical
I 1744
7726-95-6
Toxic by all routes of exposure. Extremely irritant vapour; highly skin irritant.
Use only in fume cupboard; wear rubber gloves and eye protection. Cool bromine ampoules in ice before opening in order to reduce the vapour pressure of bromine. Where possible purchase bromine water instead, if this is all that is required.
If bromine comes in contact with the skin, wash it off with copious quantities of water and then wet the skin with sodium thiosulfate solution to react with any residual material. Do not react bromine with concentrated ammonia or active metals such as magnesium, zinc an explosion may result. Reaction with sodium hydroxide is extremely exothermic and dangerous.
