Hazardous Chemical
II 1888
67-66-3
Toxic by all routes of exposure; possibly carcinogenic; avoid inhaling vapour; forms toxic phosgene gas in combustion reactions; not flammable.
Where toxic gas/fume produced, use in a fume cupboard if practicable; otherwise uses small quantities in a well-ventilated area.
Use eye and skin protection when splashes can occur.
Chloroform reacts violently - sometimes explosively - with acetone and other ketones (addition at the carbonyl group), especially in the presence of base or after an induction period; do not mix chloroform and acetone. Do not heat the vapour to a high temperature in air since highly toxic phosgene is formed. Reactions with aluminium and magnesium are violent; reactions with sodium, potassium, calcium and lithium are explosive.
A solution/mixture of <1% chloroform is not hazardous according to the Worksafe list of designated hazardous substances.
