Esters used and produced in school laboratories are volatile, sweet smelling liquids, the exception being acrylate esters.
They are flammable liquids of low toxicity, however, their vapours can cause temporary headaches and nausea.
Esters can cause solvent type dermatitis. Esters are normally produced from reactant mixtures with a total volume <50 mL, with the ester not separated as a pure product. The reactant mixture is miscible with water and may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer).
