Hazardous Chemical
II 1671
108-95-2
Highly toxic by all routes of exposure; lung irritant vapours; highly corrosive to skin.
Use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area. Use eye and skin protection when splashes are possible.
Do not wash off with alcohol. The nitration of phenol produces highly carcinogenic compounds as by-products or may produce explosive materials.
Use sulfuric acid as catalyst to prepare phenol-formaldehyde polymers; do not use hydrochloric acid since hydrochloric acid forms carcinogenic bis(chloromethyl) ether with formaldehyde.
