Instructions for the extraction of caffeine from tea or coffee often advise the use of chloroform; dichloromethane is safer, but its use is being phased out since it is an ozone depleting chemical; a non-halogenated solvent such as methyl isobutyl ketone (or acetone) is preferable.
This restriction does not relate to the consumption of tea or coffee as a beverage.

Disposal: Waste solutions of this chemical may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer).
