Toxic by inhalation. Colourless and odourless gas more toxic than carbon dioxide as it preferentially combines with the haemoglobin in the red blood cells and starves them of oxygen.Asphyxiation occurs rapidly even at low concentrations of the gas. Produced by incomplete combustion of methane/natural gas in a Bunsen burner with partially open or closed air control (mauve flame) and with Bunsen burner on the yellow 'safety flame', this applies to any gas burner. When correctly adjusted and vented, any carbon monoxide produced is oxidised to carbon dioxide in the air. Normal cross ventilation is sufficient to control the hazard when producing small volumes of this gas. Do not operate diesel or petrol engines indoors unless there is excellent cross ventilation to ensure there is no accumulation of carbon monoxide. Note: A solution/mixture of <3% carbon monoxide is not hazardous according to the Worksafe list of designated substances.
