Highly toxic by all routes of exposure; highly irritant to lungs. Use eye and skin protection. Used as a poison gas in World War I. Do not purchase cylinders of the liquefied gas due to the possibility of a large release of the gas. Make only small quantities (in a ventilated fume cupboard), best by reaction of hydrochloric acid with potassium permanganate. Have a weak alkali at hand to quench the reaction, after use. Can be used to demonstrate reaction between metals (heated) and chlorine (in gas jar). Never mix chlorine gas with hydrogen gas since a spontaneous explosion will occur.
