Slightly toxic by all routes of exposure; irritant vapour; skin irritant; very unpleasant smell, like rancid butter. Use in a fume cupboard if practicable; otherwise use small quantities (<10 mL or g) in a well-ventilated area. Use eye protection when splashes are possible. Used to make esters: methyl butanoate (rum odour) and ethyl butanoate (pineapple odour). Very useful for diffusion experiments/demonstrations. Store container in a larger sealed container to reduce escape of pungent odour.
Note: A solution/mixture of <5% butanoic acid is not hazardous according to the Worksafe list of designated substances. This solution is not suitable for the preparation of esters.
Disposal: Waste solutions of this chemical may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer).
