Ethers are generally highly volatile liquids with very high flammability. At room temperatures diethyl ether can evaporate to form explosive mixtures in air. Ethers should never be used near naked flames or electrical equipment capable of arcing between electrical contacts. Ether vapours are narcotic and can cause headaches, nausea and collapse. Ethers can also cause skin dermatitis. Ethers should be stored in brown bottles in dark cupboards to minimise the formation of explosive peroxides. Unused ether should not be returned to the reagent bottle, as there is a possibility of introducing peroxides into the reagent container.
