Hazardous Chemical
II 1715
108-24-7
Strong respiratory irritant; corrosive to skin and eyes; toxic by all routes of exposure. Use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities (25 mL or g) in a well-ventilated area. Use eye and skin protection when splashes are possible. The reaction with alcohols may be very vigorous in the presence of acid catalysts. The reaction with water can be hazardous since heat builds up at the interface between the two liquids, and the reaction is catalysed by the acetic acid formed. Explosive reaction may occur with boric acid, chromium(VI) oxide, permanganate salts, nitric acid and metal peroxides.
Note: An 8% aqueous solution is not hazardous according to the Worksafe list of designated substances. This is 8% acetic acid.
