Reacts violently with water to form corrosive lithium hydroxide solution and hydrogen gas which, on mixing with air, may explode if ignited. Handle in the same way as sodium. More difficult to cut than sodium (use a strong blade with handle, not a disposable scalpel with plastic handle). Floats on paraffin oil.
