Paints containing isocyanates are unsuitable for use in schools because:
1. These paints always contain residues of free isocyanates.
2. Free isocyanates are powerful irritants and cause allergic reactions such as skin rashes and asthma. They may also have adverse effects on the central nervous system.
3. Worksafe Australia has set a minimum exposure level for isocyanates in the atmosphere of 0.02 mg/m3. It would not be possible to meet this standard in a school without a sophisticated ventilation system.
