High molecular weight alkanes are volatile, flammable liquids, which on contact with skin dissolve skin fat and can produce dermatitis.
Note: Alkanes with carbon chain lengths greater than C15 are not volatile at room temperature. High concentrations of alkane vapours are narcotic and can cause nausea, headaches and dizziness. Avoid skin contact and breathing vapours. Pentane and hexane are toxic. Use in a fume cupboard if practicable; otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area.(It should be noted that low molecular weight alkanes, methane, ethane, propane and butane burn with a blue/invisible flame.)
