Use eye and skin protection when splashes can occur. May cause allergic reactions. Reacts violently with active metals such as sodium, aluminium and magnesium, with carbon, sulfur and phosphorus, and with a wide range of easily oxidised organic compounds.
Chromic acid, prepared by mixing a metal chromate or dichromate with concentrated acid, was once used widely as a cleaning mixture.
It is a highly dangerous material and other cleaning methods (detergents or suitable solvents) should be used instead.
Chromate precipitates should not be isolated and dried in experiments, since they are highly toxic. When using acidified solutions as an oxidising agent for alcohols in organic chemistry ensure that all solid material has dissolved and the mixture is homogeneous before heating is commenced. Do not use potassium dichromate for colouring water; use a harmless food dye instead.Disposal: Waste solutions of this chemical may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer).
