Toxic if ingested. Use eye and skin protection where splashes can occur. Highly explosive when mixed with combustible materials (such as sulfur, phosphorus or metal powders) or with organic compounds; decomposes on heating to give toxic fumes of nitrogen dioxide. Ammonium nitrate must not be mixed with diesel to make an explosive mixture.
Do not heat solid ammonium nitrate to decomposition to prepare nitrous oxide for class experiments; it may explode. Instead, heat a mixture of potassium nitrate and ammonium sulfate, or hydroxylamine hydrochloride and iron (III) ammonium sulfate. When toxic fumes/gases are produced, use in a fume cupboard if practicable; otherwise use small quantities (<25 mL or g) in a well-ventilated area. Solid ammonium nitrate must not be mixed with zinc oxide and a small quantity of water, it may explode. Note: A solution/mixture of <5% ammonium nitrate is not hazardous according to the Worksafe list of designated substances.
Q-Stores
Note: The maximum quantity of pure ammonium nitrate that may be located on any one site is 3 kg, as required by the Explosives Regulation 2005. DET sites advised by Memoranda DN/05/00493
