Moderately toxic if ingested; forms explosive mixtures with combustible materials or organic compounds.
Thermally stable, decomposing at high temperature to yield the nitrite and oxygen. [Unlike lead nitrate, can not be used to prepare nitrogen dioxide.] Calcium nitrate may be a safer alternative.
Dilute (0.1 M) solutions used to test for cations.

Disposal: Waste solutions of this chemical may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer).
