Toxic by all routes of exposure. Lung-irritant vapour evolved from the solid and concentrated solutions. Use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area. Use eye and skin protection when splashes are possible. Used to test for starch, and to titrate fatty acids to determine their degree of unsaturation. Can be prepared by dissolving solid iodine (1 g) in potassium iodide solution (2 g in 100 mL water). Store in amber bottles and keep refrigerated. Also prepared by dissolving Lugol's Iodine (potassium triiodide).Disposal: Waste solutions of this chemical may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer).
