Medium density fibreboard (MDF) releases very fine dust and formaldehyde vapour when sanded. Formaldehyde is designated a probable carcinogen.
All particleboards contain urea/formaldehyde resin and release formaldehyde when machined. It is important to consider the ventilation and dust collection requirements before using these products. Generally, plantation pine and most softwoods do not product such fine dust and do not release formaldehyde. Schools usually do not have adequate dust extraction systems to support the use of MDF.
Since there will be a variation between products, it is important to follow the directions on the label and in the MSDS.
Consult the MSDS for the product selected to determine whether it is a hazardous substance. DET schools are required to undertake a specific risk assessment when it is proposed to work MDF with hand tools or machinery.

See Section 3.3 for additional information on woods.
