Hazardous Chemical
III 1334
91-20-3
Flammable solid. Highly toxic by all routes of exposure; avoid inhaling vapour.
Use eye and skin protection when splashes can occur. Use in a fume cupboard if practicable; otherwise use small quantities (<50 mL or g) in a well-ventilated area. One mothball, if eaten, can kill a baby.
Do not heat naphthalene in the open laboratory. Naphthalene should not be used for cooling curves since safer alternatives, e.g. hexadecan-1-ol and octadecan-1-ol, are available. Phenyl benzoate is a safer alternative for rate of crystalization experiments. Use benzoic acid or phenyl benzoate for recrystallization experiments. Do not nitrate naphthalene since carcinogenic compounds are formed.
