Moderately toxic if ingested or absorbed through the skin.
Use eye and skin protection where splashes can occur. Impure samples may contain 1-naphthylamine, which may be carcinogenic; purchase and use only material of the highest purity.
Do not nitrate 1-naphthol since carcinogenic compounds are produced.
Use water-soluble N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine as a safer alternative for preparing azo dyes.
Do not isolate azo dyes as pure solids, since some are carcinogenic or contain carcinogenic impurities.
