135-19-3
Moderately toxic if ingested or absorbed through the skin.
Use eye and skin protection where splashes can occur.
Impure samples may contain 2-naphthylamine, which is highly carcinogenic; purchase and use only material of the highest purity.

Do not nitrate 2-naphthol since carcinogenic compounds are produced. Use water-soluble N-(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine as a safer alternative for preparing azo dyes.
Do not isolate azo dyes as pure solids, since some are carcinogenic or contain carcinogenic impurities.
Use ethanol as a solvent for dilute solutions.
