This entry relates to the physical testing of synthetic materials and their use.
The use of these materials and simple testing of them is applicable to K-12 students.
The burn testing or chemical testing of these materials is restricted to 7-12 students. It should be noted that burning products of some plastics are highly toxic and should be carried out in a well-ventilated area, fume cupboard or outside.
The sample burnt should be limited in size to 5 cm x 10 cm. The use of monomers to produce these plastics is not assessed here since they are not essential to curriculum outcomes.
