Boiling with dilute acid releases extremely toxic hydrogen cyanide gas.

Note: Hydrogen cyanide is a banned chemical in DET Schools.

Heating with concentrated sulfuric acid yields highly toxic carbon monoxide gas, direct heating of the solid yields highly toxic cyanogen gas. Undertake these activities in a fume cupboard or well-ventilated areas.
Forms explosive mixtures with nitrite salts. Used to detect Fe3+ ions.
