Only minute amounts of radioactive materials are allowed to be kept in schools, for demonstration purposes.
The quantity of radiation absorbed by people during the short time that they handle the equipment is negligible compared to the natural background radiation. All radioactive sources should be kept in a locked metal box, (petty cash type), in a secure storeroom.
The sources should be made large enough so that they cannot be easily misplaced or stolen.
A large piece of perspex can be attached to each source to increase their size and facilitate labelling. Geological samples containing radioactive minerals must be securely stored. Never open a radioactive source or try to dissolve it in acid or other solvent.
All radioactive sources, at the end of their useful life, must be disposed of properly. Radioactive sources are only to be handled by teachers.
