Highly toxic by all routes of exposure; evolves toxic chlorine gas; skin irritant; corrosive. Use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area.
Use eye and skin protection when splashes are possible. Reacts violently with concentrated sulfuric acid. Forms explosive products, (e.g. nitrogen trichloride) with ammonia or ammonium salts. Evolves toxic chlorine gas on contact with acids.
Decomposes in sunlight, and should be stored in a dark cupboard. Bottles build up pressure on storage in light. Can be used to conveniently prepare chlorine gas by addition of 5 M hydrochloric acid. Have 5 M alkali at hand to quench (stop) the reaction when required. Bleach must not be stored next to an acid due to the risk of accidental contact.

Disposal: Waste solutions of this chemical may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer).
