Harmful if swallowed. Forms alkaline solutions with water and may cause severe burns. Releases highly toxic hydrogen sulfide gas on contact with water and acids. Sometimes used as a photographic developer and sepia toner. Storage of the pure chemical on a school site is not recommended due to the potential to release hydrogen sulfide gas.

Disposal: Waste solutions of this chemical may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer).
