Toxic if ingested. Use eye and skin protection when splashes of solutions can occur. Evolves hydrogen gas on contact with water; hydrogen and air will explode if ignited; surface layer of strontium hydroxide is corrosive to skin and eyes. The metal is much harder to cut than sodium.
Do not mix strontium with sulfur or phosphorus, since the reaction is dangerously exothermic. Give each student only a few grains of strontium. Purchase in small quantities and store in a tightly sealed container to exclude moisture and air. Calcium is a cheaper alternative.Disposal: Solid waste of this chemical may be disposed of in the garbage (to landfill).
