Hazardous Chemical
III 2055
100-42-5
Toxic by all routes of exposure; do not inhale fumes; absorbed through skin; skin irritant. Use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area.
Use eye and skin protection when splashes are possible. The commercial material contains a stabiliser which must be removed by shaking the liquid with sodium hydroxide solution before polymerisation is attempted.
Use lauroyl peroxide for initiation of polymerisation, rather than benzoyl peroxide, since it is less toxic. This chemical has a noxious odour even at low concentrations, close supervision of students using this chemical essential. Typically, student use should be limited to 2 g activity per group/person. Use petroleum ether or methanol as solvents for dilute solutions.
