Hazardous Chemical
II 1789
7647-01-0
Toxic by all routes of exposure. Highly corrosive; highly lung-irritant; hydrogen chloride gas is evolved; highly skin irritant.
Use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area. Use eye and skin protection when splashes are possible.

Do not mix hydrochloric acid with formaldehyde solution since highly carcinogenic bis(chloromethyl)ether is formed.

Ensure that hydrochloric acid and formaldehyde solution is not disposed of down the same sink system. (Hydrochloric should be neutralised to pH 7-10 before discharge to sinks).
Use sulfuric acid rather than hydrochloric acid as a catalyst for the preparation of urea-formaldehyde polymer.

Disposal: Waste solutions of this chemical may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer) after making the solution pH: 8-10.
