Extremely toxic if inhaled; extremely unpleasant smell (rotten eggs); highly flammable.
Use eye and skin protection when splashes can occur. Odour detected at low concentrations, the nose is desensitised at higher concentrations – when present at poisonous concentrations.
Do not purchase cylinders of the liquefied gas due to the possibility of a large release of the gas. Make only small quantities (in ventilated fume cupboard), best by reaction of hydrochloric acid with iron(II) sulfide. Have weak alkali at hand to quench the reaction, when required.
