Slightly toxic, toxicity depends on cation present, especially heavy metals (e.g. lead in lead thiosulfate). Thiosulfates are used in photography (ammonium and sodium). Aqueous solutions are used in a range of chemical reactions. When thiosulfates are reacted with acids or heated to decomposition, toxic sulfur dioxide gas is produced.
Disposal: Thiosulfate solutions (not containing heavy metals) may be discharged to the sewer after treatment.
1. Solutions should be made acidic in a fume cupboard to expel sulfur dioxide gas.
2. At completion of the reaction, the solution should be made basic (use sodium hydroxide) to pH: 8-10, then discharge to the sewer.
