Toxic by all routes of exposure. Extremely corrosive. Use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area. Use eye and skin protection when splashes are possible. Evolves highly toxic chlorine gas; do not inhale vapours or allow to come in contact with skin.
Aqua regia is a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids used to dissolve gold and other platinum-group metals. Prepare in only small quantities (<10 mL) and dispose of excess material immediately after use by pouring it into a large volume of water. A brown coloration is a sign that the mixture has started to decompose and should be removed for disposal.
