Hazardous Chemical
II 2880
7778-54-3
Toxic by all routes of exposure.
Evolves toxic chlorine gas on contact with acids;
corrosive to skin and eyes; can explode if pressure of chlorine builds up in a sealed container.
Use in a fume cupboard if practicable, otherwise use small quantities in a well-ventilated area.
Use eye and skin protection when splashes are possible. Do not mix with solutions containing ammonia, since dangerously explosive nitrogen trichloride may form. Can react violently with fine particles of metals or rust. It is a safer source of chlorine than sodium hypochlorite solution, since it can not splash and is not as strongly alkaline.
