Slightly toxic if ingested and by skin absorption; possibly carcinogenic.

Use eye and skin protection where splashes can occur. May cause skin sensitisation. Anhydrous salt is blue, hydrated salt is pink; used to test the presence of water (humidity detector): e.g. "cobalt paper", silica gel desiccant. Dilute (0.1 M) solutions used to test for cations.

Disposal: Waste solutions of this chemical may be disposed of down the sink (to sewer).
