ALL LEAD SALTS ARE HIGHLY TOXIC IF INGESTED, OR IF PARTICLES ARE INHALED. GOOD LABORATORY HYGIENE AND PRACTICES WILL ESSENTIALLY ELIMINATE EXPOSURE RISKS. Lead compounds are cumulative poisons. Lead metal is non-volatile but can form toxic dusts if machined. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling lead metal to remove particles of lead oxide or lead salts. If lead metal is ingested it will be dissolved slowly by stomach acid and be absorbed by the body and accumulated. Severe lead poisoning may be fatal. Lead poisoning was common in ancient Rome due to the extensive use of lead in pipe work, pottery glazes and containers. Bright orange colours in pottery glazes are usually the result of lead compounds.
Used in electrochemical cells and to compare reactivities of metals, including metal displacement reactions.
