Highly toxic by all routes of exposure; cumulative poison.
Use eye and skin protection where splashes can occur. Use in a fume cupboard if practicable; otherwise use small quantities (<10 mL or g) in a well-ventilated area. Reacts violently with aluminium and magnesium powders, and with many organic materials. Do not heat on a charcoal block. Red lead can be found in old paints (some >30% lead), recent paints have <1% lead. Detection kits are available for lead paints.
